The Guardian First Book Award shortlist was announced today. Only one work of fiction made it to the list - the short fiction collection Sightseeing by Rattawut Lapcharoensap. Poor old Tash is out of the running once more - but hey, did so well to be longlisted.
There's such a tasty list of non-fiction here that I am actually afraid to read the details least a serious attack of bookgreed sets in.
But I have no appetite to read at the moment while I'm churning out words ...

Good luck with the NaNoWriMo words! Are you going to keep a clock on the site updating your total? That's got to be a great way to waste some time you should be writing.
Just read about it for the first time this year (so have a whole year to prepare excuses for not doing it in 2006).
thanks barrie! I did put the clock in my sidebar but it made the page so slow to load I took it down again - this internet provider seems to be having a lot of problems ... I might just put it up again on a web page ...
the nanowrimo is serious fun ... you might decide to try it next year, who knows ...
Loading times were okay here. I think you should put the clock back, so every time you see it you'd be reminded of where you are, and where you should be. I guess it's a matter of priorities. What's fun to you is work to me :) seriously I can't imagine someone _wanting_ to write.. voluntarily and for free :) it's like someone saying "you should go for root canals, they're fun !" anyway I think not many guys write for fun. Bet if you looked at all the people participating most of them would be women :)
anon - apparently two-thirds of the participants are women so you're not far wrong.

yvonne - arrgh - i'm not excited to read my novel so i don't thuink i'd wish it on anyone else - this year it feels like swimming in wet cement
But swimming in wet cement is fun. I mean think of the possibilities. it's wet, it's grey, and you're waiting to die. And then you could have a flashback.. and the story would start from there.
