Dengue?

Oh dear. The "flu" most assuredly it isn't. (Despite my arrogant declaration the other day.) My doctor suspects dengue. I've reached the same conclusion. I've had it twice before (haemorrhagic the second time) and nursed my husband through it last year. The only reason it deceived me this time is that the fever isn't spectacularly high. But the body aches are severe, and I have no energy at all. Spent the weekend on an excellent painkiller which had me floating over rooftops and feeling totally at one with the cosmos, and this morning will go get a bloodtest done.

So will be back to blogging soon as I feel better.

And if not, I bequeath my library to the nation.

Oh, on the bright side, you now have the perfect excuse to curl up the whole day in bed and read for 24 hours straight!

But still, do get well. :)

Sharon - if it is dengue, please treat this very very seriously. A third time around can be spectacularly bad. I would strongly consider hospital where they can keep an eye on things. Will be thinking of you!

thanks all

it is dengue ... blood test resul;t showed platelet level is 85 - on the low side but not at danger level - so we will see what the level is tomorrow

glenda - your warning is very appropriate - though i'm not sure if dengue does get worse subsequent times - the last time i was much sicker and needed a blood transfusion, and the fever was much higher ... but there are 4 strains of it so maybe they differ in intensity??

why is there no comprehensive health guide explaining the illness thoroughly in layman's terms? most websites that talk about it are aimed at doctors and medical professionals ... most people don't know how the illness develops and i actually know of at least one case where a guy decided to go jogging to sweat out the fever ... shortcut to suicide

Oh dear, so sorry to hear this, Sharon. I'm sure you've googled all about dengue already but just in case you missed it, this is written in simple terms.

lydia - the reference is v. good and explains why the second time is worse and haemorrhagic ... but why then is this third time not as bad as the first or second?? surely i should have the haemorrhagic version now? is this what i have with the drop in platelets being a sign of it?

yvonne - bibliobibulism? *lol*

I too have heard that it gets progressively worse.

If you feel worse, don't wait - go straight to the emergency room. It is easy to be blase about dengue because so many people get it and emerge none the worse. But there are people it kills. So take it seriously.

things i found out from my doctor just now

it isn't necessarily true that the second time you have dengue it will be worse than the first

you can have two strains of dengue simulataneously (v. nasty!)

having one type of dengue gives you only partial immunity to the other strains

fogging isn't really effective and dengue mosquitoes can live quite happily in the house

Hi Sharon
Rest well. I'm nursing a flu again and having gone through three rounds of it in a record three months, can vouch for the fact that nothing beats fluid and sleep. Here's to a quick recovery.
