Ubud on TV

Deepika Shetty e-mailed me this morning to tell me about her Off the Shelf segment on Channel News Asia which features the Ubud Readers' and Writers Festival. Sadly we aren't able to receive it here, but those of you in Singapore and other parts of Asia might manage to catch it when it airs tomorrow.

Deepika seemed to be everywhere at once at Ubud with her little camera, and she certainly got some of the best quotes of the festival on film.

My favourite was from Madhur Jaffrey talking about her memoir Climbing the Mango Trees ... and of course talking about food:
We had milk in paneer, milk in sweets, dumplings and rice, cheese sweets, without milk, India this highly lactose country would just wither away.
And there's a little Sharon soundbite on there too ...

More Ubud stuff coming soon.

I haven't really been checking thoroughly, but have you noticed there's absolutely NO coverage of Ubud from the local media?

my piece based on anita desai's sessions is in the star this sunday, and i'm writing an overview for quill. john lim of KLUE was the only other malaysian reporting on the festival.

have realised that if you're canny it is possible to attend festivals and make the trip pay for itself (or at least partly) in features

but you're right. just wish we had channel news asia here with deepika's coverage of books. can't we lobby astro for it?

i was invited so it was only the air asia fare (rm500 ish = two articles what!)plus food plus a little for transport to and from the palce where we were staying. i think that when you write you should look at what stories might finance your travel
