January Quill

The January issue of MPH's Quill magazine is in-store for members of the Reader's Circle to collect and for others to buy (RM8). There's a couple of my articles in it, including one on the Ubud Readers' and Writers' Festival, and another on Blogging for Writers (which I could have written so much more about if not for the word limit ...).

The features grow more numerous and more interesting with each issue. I particularly enjoyed Eric Forbes article for writers - Write What You Know or What You Don't Know? which has some excellent examples of authors who were able to create convincing worlds without direct experience, and Chan Mei Ling's interview with Malay novelist Faisal Tehrani.

What I don't like - really don't like - about the magazine is that some of the pages look just too hectic and cramped, and that the endless list of new acquisitions by the National Library creates a "dead area" in the centre. Quill needs, as they say, "sexing up" ...

How can anyone look at the cover and not be blinded?

[and of course they had to put Mr Rosmah on the cover as well]

blinded with brilliance???

Why don't they get Those Amazing Malay Boys to do the cover?
And certainly no photos of sleezy politicians. Would it be seditious if I were to add bugs bunny teeth and horns to the present cover?
Despite being a member, I can't seem to get a copy. The MPHs I walk into don't seem to stock them.

draw away ... provided you can track down a copy. the bigger branches certainly have them.

As I recall, the last one I looked at had Rais Yatim on the cover.

The epitome of sexiness, what.

I'd love to read your piece, Sharon. But I have never even heard of this magazine.

SHARON, I went to Midvalley's MPH and there werent any left. How many copies do they print monthly? And they should put writers on the cover instead of some dopey politician .I'm very sure you have some substantial clout to suggest some, in your own words "sexing up" of the magazine. What say you.

Quill needs sexing up. That's for sure. The National Library list is indeed a dead area. Nobody actually reads it. I can't really read it - if I want to - because the font is too small. A waste of precious pages really. It is a great idea to drop it and replace it with more articles and advertisements. A bigger font for the whole magazine will be great. And less congestion in the text will do wonders to the overall look of the magazine. I prefer the text to be flushed to the left and not justified. Quill is the only literary magazine we have in Malaysia and thus deserves all the support it can get.

dean - can emial you my piece but am afriad you might find it a bit ... unsatisfying as i didn't have enough space to really do the topic justice so it's and appetite-whetter rather than an in-depth piece

intellectually tall and anon - will pass comments on. have no clout though, i'm afraid. probably there are still copies in 1 utama. it certianly does deserve support
