10 Books a Year

I missed link to an article in the Star the other day, till I spotted a link on Raman's website. (Shows how carefully I read the paper!)

According to the report, Culture, Arts and Heritage Deputy Minister Datuk Wong Kam Hoong says the Malaysian Government is:
... targeting to have Malaysians read at least 10 books yearly from 2010. ... Malaysians only read an average of five books last year, this should gradually increase to reach the targeted number in four years from now.
My take? If you don't set your sights very high, you can't fall very far.

Sharon,

AcmaMall is having a sort of sale for fiction. 23% off. I've just bought Jesus' Son: Stories by Denis Johnson (American, short stories, is recommended by all the right people), Phineas Poe Omnibus by William Christopher Baer (pomo detective story, i think), and By Night in Chile by Roberto Bolano.

Five books last year, and in four years' time, reach the target of 10 books a year. That's an increase of 1 book a year, impressive initially - 20% increase in the first year - but a smaller increase with each passing year until it's only a 11% increase in the final year. Better they set a percentage increase rather than actual number. 20% the first year, 25% the second, 30%, etc.

Some say, shoot for the stars and you will at least hit the moon. But bugger the moon, who wants to win a dead place full of dust everywhere? Imagine the vacumming that needs to be done every day.

I say, don't shoot at all, and you won;t be disappointed. It's always been our guiding principle, why change now?
