The Down-a Worm-Hole-in-Outer-Space Literary Prize

Here's a new spin on a writing competition. Organise one with huge prizes. And then don't tell anyone about it!

Thanks goodness for Lydia Teh, who happened on an advert in the Star yesterday inviting entries for the 2006 (yes, you read that right, 2006) Utusan Group ExxonMobil Prize for Literature Young Adult Novel Competition.

I googled around and tried to find out something about it online, but with no success - not even on the newspaper's website. Curious and curiouser!

Some of the details are missing from Lydia's cutting but I posted about the competition before and guess the address and phone contact still apply. And even though the last date is 3oth April, as Lydia points out, the 2007 should be just around the corner, so get writing.

Perhaps now we can launch the Bibliobibuli Creative Writing Prize of RM50,000 and keep it very very quiet.

so silent even i don't know about it!

Perhaps they've already decided on the winner, but need a competition to justify paying the money....

Sharon, thought I got rid of that kink in the pix. If you click on the ad on my blog, the details will appear in full. But you're right. Contact details are still the same as per last contest.

I asked Utusan why the contest didn't appear in their website. Apparently there are some problems which they hope to sort out soon.

Well, you can always organise another write-a-novel-in-a-month event to complete a YA novel by the deadline. Malaysia Boleh! :)

i personally feel no one should support anything by ExxonMobil.

animah - even i am not that cynical

lydia - ok i'll check that. was puzzled about why half a pic!

visitor - give reasons lah

kenny - yeah a novel in a month is nothing! and Cean managed her winning novel in six days last time!

Lydia Teh said...

Visitor, yeah, why-lah? Does that mean we shouldn't pump Esso/Mobil fuel?

Visitor, completely agree with you. You need to educate Sharon and Lydia. Lydia, I do not as a matter of principle pump ExxonMobil fuel.

Lydia Teh said...

Animah, but Esso/Mobil gives good value for money. For every 1000 points, they give me RM15 petrol. No other petrol loyalty cards can beat that.

i am a caltex person anyway. you on which hobby horse? environment? niger delta? which petroleum company IS clean and green? just use less fuel and take public transport when you can

animah ~ you may be on to something there.

That was what happened with the "visit Malaysia 2007" logo competition last year (oddly the prize is also RM50k).

For the logo competition, the winner was already decided. Perhaps someone are just trying to make it appear to his boss that they are being fair.
