Wayang Kata: The Music Edition

From British Council :
What happens when spoken word and music share a stage? Well, we’re going to find out at Wayang Kata : The Music Edition and we invite you join us! We're joining forces with Moonshine, Klang Valley's very own homemade music show organised by singer-songwriter Reza Salleh.

We’ll have poet Kim Trusty offering you poetry alongside local musicians Najwa, Mia Palencia and the force behind Moonshine himself, Reza Salleh. Read on to find out more about them.

Kim Trusty
Kim grew up in Canada and Jamaica and now lives in Birmingham, England. Her poems have appeared in numerous anthologies in Canada, the U.S. and the UK, and she released her solo collection of poetry, Darker Than Blue in 2002.

Kim has toured England with the spoken word shows Word Temple and Temptation, and has appeared as a guest artist at many venues nationwide, including the Ways with Words Festival in Dartington, the Latitude Festival in Norwich, and the Children’s Literary Festival at the Southbank Centre, London.

Kim believes that whether it’s meant for performance or publication, good writing is the thing. She believes good writing tells truths that leave third degree burns on lips, eardrums and finger tips.

Mia Palencia
Singer songwriter, jazz crooner, voice actor, public speaker and occasionally a theatre personality, Mia Palencia is a woman of many talents. She kicked off her career as the other half of well-known local jazz act Double Take at the age of 14, with whom she has released two albums. She has sung for kings, travelled the world as a public speaker and a vocalist, and, most recently, begun exploring the world of cartoons as a voice actor. Mia released her first solo single, Sayang in September 2006. Her much anticipated first solo album, Finding My Way, was released in April 2008.

Reza Salleh
Reza Salleh has been attracting a loyal following in the past few years in the Klang Valley for his smooth soulful voice and tuneful songs that are influenced by life, love and the 90s music. The organiser of popular Moonshine at Laundry and Live at No Black Tie, he recently released an EP entitled Smoke City which has garnered a lot of radio play and was voted #1 on Fly FM’s Campur Chart.

Najwa
Najwa is currently pursuing a music degree at the International College of Music. She was formerly a student of electronics engineering at RMIT, Melbourne, Australia during which she actively performed within the large Malaysian and Indonesian student community. Najwa has already written a full album’s worth of songs on her own, and has showcased these songs in most of her performances. She is very much influenced by Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and the current crop of Neo Soul artistes like Erykah Badu and Jill Scott.

Kim will also be conducting a poetry workshop for 13-17 year olds at Dram Projects.
