Did Rushdie get the truth about polenta glaringly wrong in
The Enchantress of Florence? Just shows how carefully you have to check your facts when you write a novel, and how you will be found out (even on the most obscure points) if you don't.
And talking of Rushdie,
his piece on India's transexuals in the Times (which I should have linked too earlier) is well worth a read.
