Great to see an articulate, passionate editor talking intelligently about books and writers and writing. See, THIS is what Raman and his writers should be doing, promoting his/their publications, instead of using a newspaper as a forum to whine and bitch. In which other countries do you see editors slogging through the media rounds?
No one's going to ask you to appear on a show if you don't let them know you're willing to do it.
Unless you're very very famous...
PR in Malaysia seems to work in the way that whoever wants to publicise something has to be the one doing the cold-calls to the TV/Radio stations and newspapers. If you think you're a high-crass gennelman publisher too good to flog your own books, then no one's going to care to ask.

Since she mentions the 80s, I wonder if she ever got this back in the day: "No my first name ain't baby, it's Janet!"
"That's MISS Jackson to you!"

Maybe Fahmi should invite Raman to the show.

I think you have to understand that Raman is an elitist who prides himself in having very particular and sophisticated tastes.
He is the absolute of his domain, and he would prefer not to associate with the unwashed masses, if he can help it.
Raman has a small but fiercely committed following of elitist friends. That's how his bookshop flourishes, didn't you know?
Advertising his books is just so vulgar and proletarian. In Raman's mind, it's not his responsibility to come to you. Quite the opposite, in fact.
Writing for the Malay Mail is really swimming in the dirty wateres of the hoi polloi...

You're the washed mass :-)))
I think MM is still a terrible paper...
wow so bitchy-lah everyone.
Can't beat the Queen of Bitches, Raman.

Not true. I've been invited to appear on technical panels and such.
We all know that "unwashed masses" usually refer to anyone other than ourselves :)
