Schools Get Reading Material and Michelle Donates Her Books

This is certainly a big step in the right direction .  As World Book and Copyright Day kicks off, The Star reports that 1,000 secondary schools are each to get reading material worth RM1,000 to encourage youngsters to read. Primary schools will be targeted next. Hope that all the schools in the country eventually benefit from this initiative and that this isn't a on-off donation.  Up and down the country school libraries need stocking well if we are to have a younger generation of readers.

And if we had any doubts about Reading Ambassador Datuk Michelle Yeoh taking her task seriously, she is planning to set up a corner for her books in the National Library.  She also says that she reads 10-15 books a month, mostly work related.

Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad  has also been appointed a campaign ambassador.

Indeed a good idea but could the kids read those books which are mostly in the English language. That is why I kept saying that the school must put more time in the teaching of the English language. The best way is to have two class English and English literature. By doing that our kids would learn the way to understand the language and with that be able to read books.

As you can see there are hardly any books of value in BM in the book stores, so when the authority say Kempen Membaca, I ask nak baca apa ?.

How timely that the Bio channel (Astro 731) has started showing a documentary on Datuk Michelle Yeoh this past week.

Actually there are books in English in the school libraries. I'm a retired teacher and also used to work for the Education ministry and have gone round Malaysia observing teachers and schools. Students don't read the English books - they prefer the Malay books because its something they understand. Also many of the books are old classics which to today's children are boring and old-fashioned. Ask a teenager today to read Pride and Prejudice and they will stare at you but they probably wouldn't mind the film version. Also we should stock our libraries with more young adult fiction and fantasy - books they may want to read because its closer to their world.

I wonder what she reads? What would be considered work-related, for Michelle Yeoh? Literature? Scripts? ..? (I'm intrigued)
