We know that no Chinese who writes in the Chinese language will ever be bestowed the title of Sasterawan Negara*, unlike in Singapore where the literatures of all the main language streams are recognised and honoured with the Cultural Medallion, etc. This from a most eloquent article by Kee Thuan Chye expressing Chinese frustrations. Uthaya Sankar S.B. has, of course made the point about no non-Malays ever holding the post before. (And there is a lot of very good discussion in the comments to the post.) Let's hope that things really do change soon, because participation by all races of a nation is vital to its life (literary and otherwise!).
