I think they've been doing a great job recently, putting out more pages on book news than any other local newspaper, usually 3 pages on a Sunday, and articles in Star Two on Tuesday and Friday.
But theirs is a lonely battle. They say they get no feedback from newspaper readers to tell them how they're doing or what is going down well. That makes it harder to fight for their space.
If you appreciate their efforts or have comments about what you like/don't like in that section of the newspaper, why not let them know at:
starmag@thestar.com.myYour feedback can be used to lobby the management.
Me, I put in my request for an eight-page literary supplement and space for the reviews of local books! Star management, please take note.
Anyway, I have enough problems to worry about this morning. I have a photographer coming round to take a photo for the feature and I'm having a really awful awful bad hair day!
*My mistake. Star Two sometime soon.

you need my industrial strength hair wax my friend!!
Sharon, that's great! Look forward to this Sun's Starmag. I'll have to write in to Starmag to tell them they're doing a fantastic job. If I remember correctly, in Star's Power of 9 contest, Starmag came in second at a popularity contest, only beaten by the main news section.
About your hair, if all else fails, just don a scarf or a tudung. It will hide many evils. Then people will know for sure that you are indeed a Bakar.
hahahah you girls are evil-lah lah :))
yes to the supplement and great work, starmag!
have fun at the shoot. seeing kadek at silverfish before i dash off to work!
Thanks for highlighting this.
Would have just enjoyed the weekly articles, taking them for granted. Without thinking of writing in any encouragements.
A weekly literary supplement would be wonderful for booklovers!
I agree with Eric. I love the Guardian Saturday supplements - I think its called literary review - and its only about books, or about writers.
I certainly support more book related features in Star Mag. If they can do 6-8 pages on mangga, why not on books???
the guardian is the best newspaper in the world for book pages - the only other that comes near is the NYT
You'll look just fine.... :) I'm sure of that.
PS. I can now show my mom and dad who the great Sharon Bakar is. Hahahaha....
I shall give my 'aye' with eric and animah. A literary supplement will be great, be it weekly, biweekly or even monthly. There is much that is going go in the book world that many of us do not know about.
BTW, it is a great idea to encourage the writers for Star Mag. Thanks for sharing their feelings and needs.
Hello Sharon,
Just writing to tell you that the story will not be coming out this Sunday at StarMag. :P No, it'll be coming out in Star Two, and I'm not sure exactly when, but it should be in the coming weeks.
Take care, and I luve your blog! I'm a silent lurker most of the time. ;)
thanks all, glad you agree about the need to say thanks. actually since i started writing and experienced the same lack of feedback for printed articles myself (how unlike a blog!) i've often written back to feature writers when a piece has moved me. will make an effort to do more of that in future.
how noce a supplement would be. but where would the money come from? (which has to be the bottom line). actually i think the guardian and other bookshops partly finance their pages by selling online the books they feature.
thanks elizabeth, will keep an eye out for it. my hair behaved itself in the end for the camera lens in the end - the shoot was fun.
it was nice to meet you the other day and have the excuse to drop by and disturb everyone's work by chatting to them - oh and the chance to root through "the cupboard" (i lifted 4 books but damn, now i have to review them!)
thanks for the kind words re. the blog - now you've stopped being silent and we know you're there!
Sharon, your blog shd be part of the supplement.
It's already a de facto one for many of us, I'm sure.
p/s - if there ever is a Tuesdays With Sharon in the PJ part of town, pls let me know!
Yes, I do love the "cupboard" so much. ;) Sometimes I'll bug Gim Ean to look inside so I can feel "happy" - like a kid looking at rows and rows of chocolates. :)
Oh i can't believe I wrote that, haha. I mean, I bug Gim Ean for a look inside! LOL. The things I write when I wake up in the morning ...
spot - thanks for kind words, but i actually have more fun blogging! anyday with sharon also can. just come round for a chat. i can't promise you wisdom but i can promise you tea
elizabeth - i get the same feelings
freudian slip - i supper conditioned it and left it a bit wet. terrible. you guys never have this problem.
Which is more than she'll promise me anyway. Not much of a chatter :)
PS. Been meaning to write a few book reviews myself. I'll just have to email them and ask I guess.
you should write reviews ... and yes, just send them. give it a try.
