Literary Saturday in Bangsar

Here, for you to admire, is the cover of the US edition of The Gift of Rain to be published by Weinstein Books and due for release on 6th May.

The book has been released in Australia and got an excellent review by Lorien Kaye in the Age ("a masterful achievement ...").*

You can meet Tan Twan Eng this Saturday at MPH's Breakfast Club (11a.m. Bangsar Village 2) and get your copy of the book signed. Eric tells me that there is even a lucky dip so that one lucky reader can get a free signed copy! If that's not enough, you can have all the curry puffs you can eat!

You can have a really literary day in Bangsar on Sat. After breakfast club and a long gourmet lunch in one or another of the delectable eateries in the area, amble over the road to "Readings", and after that to Silverfish to listen to Max Lane who was the translator for Pramoedya's books. Lane will be launching his translation of Pramoedya's Arok of Java.

Nothing literary happens in KL?

(*Sadly the review is not online but I can forward the PDF to anyone who wants to read it.)

Arrrrgh... reminds me again that I need to be in Port Dickson starting tomorrow late afternoon and for the rest of the weekend, and miss out on all these. SIGH.

Met Max Lane yesterday...
He'll take you straight into Pramoedya's world. Fascinating stuff. At a time when we think nothing of punching keys, a man sat behind bars saving every little bit of paper..... For more on the writing process of a literary great, get to that event.

he's going to be in singapore for a fairly long stretch beginning feb next year, so you can book another trip if you don't get to meet max, he'll be at ubud too. doing a post, there's so much fascinating stuff he said, if i don't punch it down, it might take another eternity.

Gosh! That's much nicer than the UK cover... I hope it goes down well in the US... surely the film is only a matter of time now.

Seriously. Beautiful. Cover.

If it's a hokey motivational book.

But it's not.

So ugly it can be a motivational poster.

I completely agree with Irman. What's with this US cover? It reminds me of those "conversation with god" type.

I much prefer the UK one.

Reminds me of Paulo Coelho.

i like it better ...

i also like US paperbacks much better, flexible spines and nice to hold.

Hear Hear Sharon, have always been a strong proponent of US covers. British covers are shite, and rarely do justice to the subliminal works contained within.
