The Library That Can't Lend Books

This great distinction belongs to the KL Library which has been telling members since December 24th last year that they cannot borrow books because of "“technical problems” with the library’s computer system, according to the Star today. The library has not been able to process the books manually due to problems keeping track of the books.

Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur public and international relations officer Anwar Mohd Zain is quoted as saying that the system should be back up and working by the end of this month.

I can imagine a whole lot of frustrated readers out there ...

Note:

Talking about frustration, I'm not able to send or receive from my main email account at the moment. If you have sent me anything in the last 24 hours please could you send it to my yahoo account? : sharonbakar at yahoo dot com. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I'm not a frustrated reader but a frustrated taxpayer. So who's the IT contractor - the best for the job, the one who submitted the cheapest bid but can't perform, the one who paid a lot of people to get the job?
(Note: I have no idea who the contractor is, I am speaking generally, so don't read this as defamatory).

Next, what happened to the contingency plan. Is there one? They can't do manual, why ever not, or are they just to lazy to figure out one?

What is the point of building a huge library at extravagant costs and then not bothering to maintain the IT system properly - which costs peanuts in comparison.

malaysia boleh what. sigh. and they want a thinking society. national library - went there once ater visiting bernama. walked into two courting teenagers in between shelves of books. ngaaaaar.

i don't think the powers that be here know what a library is.

i heard UM library is fab though, and so's ISTAC and IKIM. but yes, we the public can't borrow books from there either. i don't think it's due to their IT system. they have some weird red tape going on...

I am a frequent user of our public library and I can tell you that they are very disorganised. And just in the last year, they have this similar problem more than twice.
Their books are outdated especially the ones where you can borrow and their choice of books is appalling. I even wrote to them about their service but received no reply. *sigh*

That's true.. If I ever get that 100 subscribers I'll implement and maintain the network myself, so you won't have to worry about that :)

as for tracking books, one movie came in my mind "Enemy of the State".

what if in the future, libraries have satellite tracking system for those who didn't return their overdue books. They can track the books, zoom in to the culprit's house and Zap! laser blast from the sky. Never knew what hit 'em.

Amusing isn't it. A library that doesn't lend books. So what does it call itself now? An archive?
