Best Sellers

This is the fiction best-seller list for this week from MPH Mid-Valley. Most of the books are quite preditable but I'm blinking hard at the Orhan Pamuk titles on the list - who'd have thought him suddenly so popular? Amitav Ghost's book probably made it there because the members of my book club were reading that. Wonder how many copies it takes to put a book on a best-seller list?

1. The Associate by John Grisham

2. Sidney Sheldon’s Mistress of the Game by Tilly Bagshawe (???!)

3. The Host by Stephenie Meyer

4. Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella

5. What Happens in London by Julia Quinn

6. My Name is Red by Orhan Pamuk

7. Snow by Orhan Pamuk

8. The Glass Palace by Amitav Ghosh

9. Starting Over by Tony Parsons

10. My Sister’s Keeper (movie tie-in) by Jodi Picoult

I loved the Glass Palace! Wonderful epic.

As for Orhan Pamuk, his books are popular in Indonesia (translated into Bahasa Indonesian) - I even found a copy in a boondock town in Kalimantan. Not sure how his popularity is translated for the average Malaysian reader...

I pity anyone who tries to plod through Pamuk's Snow. Those are hours I'll never get back!

thanks Chet. funny name for a sequel!

agree, Jordan. which is what amkes it odder still.

notice there is no local fiction on the list, though Shamini Flints novel was up there last week.

Locals rarely made it on the MPH list because I was told they don't shelve local author's works under "Fiction" shelf. Instead, novels written by locals are shelved under "Asian" or "Local Interest" shelves, etc. Strange, isn't it???

Hello.

I was wondering if i could get your e-mail address.

I'm a young Malaysian Author, and i'd just recently self-published my novel.

Local books in Malay (fiction) have their own Malay Fiction list.

Local books in English (even the fiction ones) tend to be on the Local Non-Fiction list.

Shamini's book was by an ang moh publisher so would not be on the Local Non-Fiction list.

In my experience, 30 books a week will guarantee you a spot in the Top 5.

sure you can send me a copy of your novel Baby Angel but no promises to review it. however, would you like to write a piece for this blog about getting your first novel published?

my email is sharonbakar@yahoo.com

I also ploughed through Orhan Pamuk's Snow before giving up after 20 odd pages.

About best sellers list, from what booksellers tell me, a book which sells about 100 copies will make it to the top 10, so Amir is quite right.

wah...so many brave people giving their honest views on orhan pamuk.

if only they are brave enough to say what they really feel about our 'local authors'?...but may be our local authors write better than orhan pamuk no?

time for you to start reviewing again mr ah pong!

I was recently in MPH..and I steered clear of Orhan Pamuk.. after having nearly committed harakiri while reading 'My Name is Red". I think one of the reasons might be they are selling his books at a discount- buy 2 get 1 free or something like that..not sure though..The
Glass Palace , , My Name is Red,Snow ..all these are probably there in the list due to this cheap sale!
