International Young Publisher of the Year - Update

Several people got in touch with me re. the IYPY award when I first put up the information about it .

The full details of the award and a timetable for the various stages of the contest can be found here, and information about how to apply here.

Wonder if we will find anyone suitable? Truth is, we need folks who fit these criteria if the publishing industry is to take off locally. If not this year then maybe further down the road ...

Maybe awareness that such an annual award exists is a useful first step.

Call me ignorant, but when you say 'local publishers', I can only think of Silverfish. =P

Not quite but almost. There are a few others (e.g Neohikayat) ... and on the e-publishing side probably many more. Maybe too there are ventures not yet off the drawing board ...

Blah.. this is just discrimination. no one gives an award to old publishers :)

Oh yes, I forgot about Neohikayat. But I remember what you told us about us not having a sizeable number of writers in the first place - that sort of stops fledgling ventures from taking off doesn't it?

porty: Like Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka? ;)

Everything needs to grow, Priya ... I think that a publisher who encouraged and fostered writers (as Neohikayat is doing) is what's needed most .....

Hello there, sorry to add to this at this very late stage. A few comments from the British Council London team that manages this programme.

IYPY is now IYPE, so International Young Publishing Entrepreneur. The name change is to bring it in line with the other eight awards for young creative entrepreneurs that we run.

Malaysia has, so far, taken part in the Design Entrepreneur (2008, Si Juan Ng) and Music Entrepreneur awards (2007, Jason Lo and 2008, Hardesh Singh) - unfortunately not publishing. Regionally India, Philippines and Thailand have all taken part in IYPE, with Indian publisher Anand winning in 2007. For further information please contact the British Council in Malaysia.

The IYPE award now has an established alumni network, currently chaired by Maltese publisher Christopher Gruppetta. You can find out more about Chris here: www.creativeconomy.org.uk/iype07

There's also now a UK award, which this year will see six finalists heading to India - you can find out more here: www.creativeconomy.org.uk/ukype09

I hope that it helps anybody who is interested in the international publishing scene and encourages young people to think about the opportunities within the creative industries - the business side of the creative sector.

thanks very much for the update. malaysia has some very good independent publishers in the past - really a lot has been happening - but they weren't eligible as they were all slightly over the age limit! it was very frustrating! i did publicise the award though and no-one at all came forward. maybe there are others who might now want to come forward and i will check with my friends in BC about promoting this again.

very many thanks for thinking of us!
