Those Who Must, Write. The Rest? Forget It!

Creative writing courses, workshops, retreats ... should be stopped says Jenny Sinclair (who is herself doing an honours year in creative writing at the University of Melbourne). The only people who be allowed to write are those who must write.

The lady talks a lot of sense, so listen up, wannabes!

Burnnnnnn herrrrr! Before she infects the others! ;) Well, haven't read the article yet but I kind of understand what she means, this romantic sense of having only passion to drive you on. I don't think creative writing classes TEACH you how to write (think you've said this yourself Sharon, if I'm not mistaken) and I heartily agree, but I don't think they should be discounted altogether. Think it provides a guide for people who are lost. Anyway - it's a choice. People who scoff at creative writing classes shouldn't take them then. But at least there's a choice! And don't we love choices, with our 27 what-might-have-beens as we order our 28th choice at Starbucks!

don't assume you know what the article says until you've read it!!! haha

I read it. Thanks for finding it and spreading the word. Nothing but good sense and great advice.

Is this like the "selected works" compilations that make one wonder who is the person making that selection and what makes he/she think that he/she is qualified to make the choices for us?

One of the "he/she" should have been "him/her", of course. Sorry to be anal but grammar, eh. Never was my favourite subject.

I thought it was a very human article. Janet should read it before she shoots from the hip.

Animah - I did qualify that I hadn't read it before I shot from the hip, as you put it. My comments were made solely based on the phrase linked to the article. After reading it, I of course realised that there was more to the article.

Animah - I don't think Sharon was referring to Janet.

This is one time I will not run. I fully deserve being twacked on the head.

What do I think? I'm looking at my myriad of blank notebooks and thinking it's time I give this another shot.
