Says Chair of Judges Jane Smiley, she and co-judges Amit Chaudhuri and Andrey Kurkov :
... all read books by authors we had never heard of before and they have turned out to be some of the best books we’ve ever read. ... It makes me wonder who else is out there untranslated into English.

My money's on JCO...as in, Joyce Carol Oates, not those sinful donuts. She has always been, and still is, the most prolific working author this age. I love her High Lonesome Collected Stories, a must for every book lover.

Mahasweta Devi is not from Bangaladesh. She's an Indian. She's from the state of West Bengal.
